Prevention Education

Reducing the incidence of sexual violence and ensuring victims are aware of services, requires a comprehensive awareness and prevention education program. The Sex Abuse Treatment Center’s (SATC) awareness/education program is implemented through the following activities:

In this section:
Classroom Presentations for School Age Children
Teacher Trainings
Presentations for Community Organizations
Trainings for Professionals
Media Activities and Community-Based Wellness Events
Public Policy, Agency Collaboration and Research

Classroom Presentations for School Age Children

Multi-session classroom presentations are available for children K-12th grade.  The goal of the presentations is to help young people lead healthy, violence-free lives.  They cover a range of topics tailored to a student’s grade level, from basic lessons on personal boundaries and accessing help if victimized to lessons on sexual harassment, sexual exploitation via the internet and cultivating safe, respectful dating relationships.

Teacher Trainings

The SATC is in the process of developing sexual violence prevention curricula for teachers (K-12th grade) to use in the classroom.  The curricula will include interactive, teacher-friendly lesson plans and materials tailored to address Hawaii Health Education standards. The SATC staff will partner with teachers to provide them comprehensive training and support.

Presentations for Community Organizations

The SATC offers presentations to various community organizations to increase their knowledge and sensitivity regarding sexual violence, to make them aware of services available for victims and their families, and to empower them to protect themselves from victimization and others, such as children. The SATC staff serves a wide range of groups such parent groups, religious groups, college students, youth organizations, prison inmates, senior citizen groups, etc. Educators tailor content and delivery for these one-session presentations to meet the needs and concerns of those in attendance.

Trainings for Professionals

The SATC develops and conducts seminars/ trainings for professionals who work with sexual assault victims. These professionals include crisis workers, law enforcement personnel and medical personnel. Trainings are also provided to professionals who serve those who are at increased risk for sexual victimization, such as children and at-risk youth. These professionals include teachers, school counselors, social workers, Alternative School personnel, etc. In addition, training on sexual violence has been incorporated into college and university degree programs. Each training is tailored to meet the specific needs of those in attendance.

Media Activities and Community-Based Wellness Events

Throughout the year, television and radio commercials and public service announcements are aired throughout Hawai‘i to raise awareness about sexual violence and to encourage victims to seek counseling services.

During Sexual Assault Awareness month in April, a variety of awareness building activities are held in conjunction with press releases to local media. Activities include such things as shopping mall exhibits, bookstore readings and slide shows, poster campaigns, awareness raising events at schools, and read aloud story times at libraries for parents and children utilizing books on keeping children safe from abuse.

In addition, every year thousands of residents are exposed to educational displays and brochures on services for victims and sexual violence prevention strategies at community fairs and events.

Public Policy, Agency Collaboration and Research

The SATC staff participates in activities, meetings, coalitions and task force groups to enhance the welfare of sexual assault victims and to address sexual assault prevention. Public policy activities include the identification of issues, implementation of guidelines or laws, and the evaluation of initiatives to affect the lives of sexual assault victims.

Respect Media Campaign
The [respect] public awareness media campaign is targeted at young males to emphasize the importance of respecting the sexual limits of others. The campaign highlights these key messages:

  • Sexual assault is a crime that can have serious impacts on the victim.
  • Consent for sexual activity must be freely given.
  • Being pressured, tricked, or physically forced into sexual activity is not giving consent.

The [respect] campaign includes television and radio spots which air throughout Hawaii. It was developed by the Sex Abuse Treatment Center and the Hawaii Coalition Against Sexual Assault.

Respect is a Choice Program
The Sex Abuse Treatment Center and the Honolulu Theatre for Youth offer an educational program in Hawaii targeted at young males to prevent sexual violence. Choice, written by Yokanaan Kearns and performed by two male actors from the Honolulu Theatre for Youth, explores sexual violence and the role males can play in preventing it. The powerful 30 minute play is followed by a group discussion facilitated by a male educator.

Choice is performed exclusively for high school males.  Schools or organization can schedule a classroom performance by calling the Honolulu Theatre for Youth at 839-9885.
